Do any of you use really well known or old design principles in your layouts for an added effect? Which ones have you used/seen? Do you have any suggestions for others? As an example, I'm in the…Continue

Currently, I'm Editor-in-Chief for the 2012-2013 school year at The Clarion, Madison Area Technical College's student newspaper. I started in 2010 as a page designer / copy editor, quickly becoming addicted.

Would love some feedback on my latest work, if you have a moment. I've had a little more time this semester (aka a little less sleep) so I've managed to actually produce some graphics instead of letting my staff do them all.

Took a look at your pages. You are definitely a talented graphics reporter.

The one comment I have regarding your redesign is that page labels (i.e. GAMES) seem to float across the top of the page, and I'm not sure that always allows for clarity.

Beyond that, I'm a fan. Definitely enjoyed your evolution of Link, and would love to see your nap graphic as a PDF.

That's good! Maybe I'll have a little more feedback for you after you've uploaded your pages, but I've enjoyed what I've seen.

I will! Actually was just responding to some emails about that. As graphics editor, I won't have a huge role, but I'll be focusing on a new style guide for our graphics and creating new templates.

This semester, too, I've been focusing less on the DN, except for creating budgets and managing staff. I've been doing a lot of work for my class, which is a coloq in which we're filming a documentary about a car museum. Kind of offers a lot of opportunity for growth in advertising and commercial design. A new challenge, one that I've enjoyed.

Listen, if you need any contacts through Gannett or anything, let me know. I'm positive there are some people that would enjoy talking to you, especially given your variety of experiences at the Clarion.

Yeah, I saw that! I'm a fan of the redesign. I think it looks cleaner, and a bit more mature, overall. Particularly the masthead.

We'll be starting a redesign here at the DN not too long from now.

And not sure about Quark, but I know CCI is entirely different than InDesign. The advantage is that it allows you to work on multiple layers at the same time. For instance, copy editors can be editing a story as I'm placing it. It lets you paginate very quickly. The difficulty is that it's not so much about design; it's more about getting pages done efficiently.

I actually designed several pages in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, then imported them into the system.

Yeah! I was a Pulliam Fellow for the Star. It was an incredible opportunity. Honestly, I'm not so thrilled with a lot of my clips, but I'm extremely happy with the experience and perspective it gave me.

Learned a lot about working in shrunken newsrooms and happily learned CCI, Gannett's pagination software.

Hey George! Looking forward to seeing some more good work from you this year.

Very nice work. And not "nice for a community college paper," I mean "nice for a big metro paper." Good stuff.

The end of the first semester

It has been a long, grueling, unforgiving semester filled with disappointing, dream crushing, heart smashing, and most importantly, a very passionate staff that I'm extremely grateful for.

I started out this semester as a designer-turned-editor thinking this was going to be a piece of cake. To some extent this was true, but most of that notion was immediately proven wrong. Managing a staff of 10 with 40-50 writers is very hard.

But it wasn't just the staff and new management…
