It seems like there is an F-22 on the cover of the Gulf Defender at least 50 percent of the time, so I was not excited to design another cover about the planes' technical problems. But after realizing the story focused on what made the military finally fess up that something was wrong, the "Tipping point?" headline and angled photo emerged as winners. This page also features the redesigned flag of the Gulf Defender, after Tyndall Air Force Base officials and our editors requested we retire the super-patriotic, "too complicated" former flag.
