As part of our ongoing coverage of the police force here, reporter Bianca Montes took a look at the demographics of the force and how that compares to that of the city. Late in the process, we realized file art just wouldn’t cut it. So my graphic moved out front and I came up with this illustration that was a) simple, so it was fast, and b) played with positive and negative spaces. It wasn’t what I would have pitched, but I really liked the result on the page. Late Friday afternoon, reporter Jessica Priest got her hands on police reports of a pair of domestic disturbance calls that came right before a deadly house fire. Not only did that require a timeline treatment, that treatment had to go atop page one, pushing the police demographics downpage. In all, two graphics-driven stories for the Sunday front.
