Another way to illustrate a trend story for which you have no art at all: Find a file photo — any file photo — that can be used in a less-than-literal way. For this story on America’s endangered middle class, I found the wire photo I wanted but couldn’t get the rights to cheaply. Plan B was to use this publicity picture from a sitcom about the middle class. Mission accomplished.
