Discarded plastic and other materials are

increasingly ending up as debris in our

oceans and shorelines. The UN Environment

Programme estimated in 2006 that every

square kilometre of sea held nearly 18,000

pieces of floating plastics. The Straits Times

examines the extent of the pollution and the
