The price of first-class postage dropped two cents last week. It was the first decrease in the price of a stamp in 97 years. However — believe it or not — the actual cost of mailing a letter really hasn’t changed much over the past three-and-a-half decades and is essentially the same as it was in 1885. We’ve all seen that stair stepped chart showing stamp prices rising over the years, but you hardly ever see those prices adjusted for inflation. I did this one two years ago for the OC Register. Here, I do it again, except now I have numbers going back to the Civil War.
