With the hockey playoffs still going on, it was kind of lucky that we hit the 65th anniversary of when Frank Zamboni applied for a patent on his ice surfacing machine. What made this even better: It's a local story for us. Zamboni owned and operated the Iceland Skating Rink in Paramount, Calif. The icing on the cake: Zamboni didn't stop there. He also invented the Grasshopper, a device that rolls up artificial turf, and the Astro Zamboni, which sucks water out of artificial turf. A fascinating guy, that Zamboni fellow. And thanks to the Zamboni Company for having high-rez handout images on its web site. May 16, 2014
