For the 145th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad, I wanted to offer a timeline of the project, to touch on the political scandals that erupted as a result and to explain this was how former Gov. Leland Stanford -- as in Stanford University -- made his bazillions. Kind of a text-heavy page, but a decent read.
