In the past couple of years, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem saw a higher-than-average number of grizzly bear conflicts, including deaths that made national news. Population - both grizzly and human - and lack of whitebark pine cones all play into the equation. When stacked together population, Yellowstone visitation and pine cone production numbers paint a perfect storm scenario for grizzly encounters. We paired the chart with some historical context in the form of a timeline that runs parallel to the statistics. The timeline includes color-coded entries for deaths, notable conflicts and important dates dealing with delisting. Maps supply more context in terms of where grizzlies roamed before we showed up and where they are now.
