We had a tough time figuring out our front this week. Our big story was an enterprise piece focused on how much more work new state requirements would create for our already overstretched counselors.
An infographic would work, we decided, but I wanted to make sure it conveyed the idea of the story quickly and was visually interesting.
I wanted to compare how much time it would take the counselors to do their new tasks versus other common times, to give some perspective. A bar graph would work, but it would be lame and wouldn't catch any eyes -- just another element, not a major feature of the page.
So I decided to go big and run these huge concentric circles representing the amount of time each task would take. For each (quarter) circle, 1 radial inch was equal to 100 hours.
We picked some quirky data points, like how many hours students spend on Facebook each semester, spend sleeping, spend working, etc., and compared those to the 1600 hours counselors would have to spend doing new tasks (the bold red line at the bottom of the page).
The end result looks a bit like a clock, reinforcing the time idea.
