Who ranks among the best college football players in history? It’s tough to pick — but the Football Writers Association of America is doing it anyway. The group is compiling its list of first-, second- and third-team All-Time All-Americans from the modern era (1944 to now). Try picking only six running backs from the likes of Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Billy Cannon, Tony Dorsett, Melvin Gordon, Archie Griffin, Bo Jackson, Adrian Peterson, Mike Rozier, Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, Emmitt Smith and Herschel Walker — and that is only one-third of the 40 running back candidates on the ballot. The historical teams will be released this summer.
