RAISING WIZARDS

The young Rizal had such a big skull he tended to tip over, Ambeth Ocampo tells us. The personification of Filipino genius continues to inspire parents who dream of having gifted children. But being gifted should not mean a child is put on display, or that one facet of development should be exaggerated at the cost of others, leading to unhappiness and stunted growth, whether physical or emotional. As we celebrate giftedness in children, let us bear in mind that it can be expressed in many ways, none of which should be at the cost of humanity or humaneness.
