We didn't have access to the pitchers at the same time (or even on the same day), so for this cover shoot photographer John Pendygraft and I made two trips to the Rays' spring training site in Port Charlotte. Pendygraft shot each player individually, and I worked with artist Don Morris on making one image out of the five photographs.
To reinforce the section's "Inside the Numbers" sabermetrics theme (think Moneyball), I built the screen behind the mast entirely from players' 2011 statistics. I applied the same technique to the page labels inside the section.
