It was down to a choice to a just a clean page with four similar photos -- or take the gamble. Normally silhouette photos don't work out in print -- they usually black out or highlight-out the other direction. I thought, what if we took advantage of the silhouette shot and cut it out and then used a nice western-looking font. The Western font is Rockwell, which is actually one of the newspaper's standard fonts. With some good photo-toning and a great press crew, the gamble worked.
