The European tradition of a belen or the Nativity scene reached the Philippines in the 18th century, becoming the dominant Christmas decoration in the home. From its earlier versions made of bamboo and Japanese paper, the parol has evolved, translating the colorful and joyous Yuletide season into spectacular sizes and forms.
