The first Sunday A1 graphic centerpiece I’ve done in a long, long time. For this one, reporter John Hardin researched how the extraction of groundwater causes land in the Houston area to sink, or “subside.” This causes low pockets that become more prone to flooding. The diagram up top was adapted with permission from an old San Diego Union Tribune graphic. The map was John’s own data research. The picture at the bottom is a 40-year-old file photo.
