This is one of my favorite Sunday centerpieces so far. Environmental reporter Sara Sneath talked to experts on the endangered whooping cranes. We have a growing, thriving population on the Texas coast, but there is a lot of money being pumped into an attempt to kick-start a flock on the East Coast, too. It's not doing so well and it's sapping funding that could be put to more productive use. The pictures of whoopers attending their nest and a pair of abandoned eggs covered by black flies are handouts from the Fish & Wildlife people. Sara also wrote the terrific headline.
