THAT DAY IN AUSTIN

It’s the 50th anniversary of one of the first really big mass shooting incidents: The day Charles Whitman, a 25-year-old ex-Marine sniper, opened fire from the tower at the center of campus at the University of Texas. He killed his mom, his wife, a receptionist and two bystanders before going out to the observation deck to begin his spree. From there, he killed nine, plus an unborn baby, plus two who died a week later, plus one who died from his injuries 35 years later. I researched and wrote this. All the photos were in our archives. We later turned this into an interactive, with design work by Rachael Gleason and a 3D campus map by Ken Ellis. A sad story. I hope I did justice to the victims.
