ABOUT THAT FLAMING BALL OF LIGHT IN THE SKY...

The National Weather Service forecast ten consecutive days without rain in Victoria. If it actually made it ten days, it would be a new record for this year: The most days we've had so far with no trace of rain was nine, back in February. So building the graphic was easy. All we needed to make this into a centerpiece was a story. Our reporters were tied up, so I offered to write the story myself. I know weather pretty well, so why not? Now, all we needed was some sunny day art. Before I made an assignment for our shooters, it occurred to me: I already have sunny day art. That morning, the rising sun streamed through my bedroom window. Only half-awake, I grabbed my iPhone, shot this picture and tweeted it. So hours later, I remembered. The photo wasn't perfect -- backlit silhouettes never are -- but it was good enough to get the job done. So the story, the picture, the graphic, the design and even the headline were all mine this day. It's kind of fun when that happens. April 30, 2015
