More and more urban Indian families are losing their original colour and character because their children no longer speak the mother tongue. This is a trend that’s being driven by large-scale migration, mixed marriages, nuclear families, and the educational and career opportunities that a knowledge of English offers. Should this be a cause for worry? Or should we simply embrace it, given that our English-speaking population is seen the world over as a huge national advantage? What are the implications of this linguistic inversion? Is it part of a larger undeclared culture war? Or, just a sign of the times?
