This is Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of the Pakistan army. The US is counting on him to get them out of Afghanistan, and he’s managed to leverage that to his advantage. As he quietly, almost imperceptibly, emerges from the shadows, it’s becoming clearer by the day that he is the real ruler of Pakistan, not Zardari. And that may not be good news for India: Kayani, who earlier headed the infamous ISI, is implacably hostile to India and is believed to be comfortable with the idea of using terror as a means to keep New Delhi unsettled. What should be India’s response to him? The other big question doing the rounds is: will he, in the coming months, move to edge out Zardari and anoint himself president?
