After two weeks of teaching for Media24's news artists in Cape Town, the company hired me to spend two months working with the artists in Johannesburg. I was given an office in the business department, so it's no surprise I wound up working closely with the reporters and editors there. This complicated piece combined a timeline, two separate sets of bar charts and some detailed information provided by reporter James-Brent Styan. Check out the second word in the headline and you'll figure out what the graphic is about: "pensioenfonds" is "pension funds." I spent a lot of time finessing this piece but it was a great investment: I won lots of allies in Sake24 that week. And the warm feelings led right into the work I helped them do to get ready for the launch of their redesign three weeks later. October 2009.
