FLASHBACK: CHERNOBYL

My Flashback feature this week was the Chernobyl incident, 30 years ago this week. I touched on this topic several years ago when I did the anniversary of Three Mile Island. I managed to find more depth time time around. I recap what happened, explain what officials in the Ukraine are doing to secure the old reactor and then I cite the 19 worst nuclear accidents ever. There’s some mighty fine reading down there in that list, including one meltdown caused by an operator forgetting to remove silica gel packs from brand-new fuel rods and 250 people irradiated when a hospital shuts down and accidentally leaves behind its radiation source for radiotherapy treatment. Scavengers picked up the device, hoping to recycle it for cash. Four died, including the niece of the scavenger.
