A colleague on the wire desk challenged me to find a way to adapt this wonderful New York Times science piece into a focus page. I had to slash about 85 percent of the prose and what I kept, I used in little chunks around the giant graphic the Times moved on its wire. Very complicated, but I think we did OK with the material. I wish it was a bit more colorful, but I would have had to redraw the graphic. Aug. 19, 2013.
