Naturally, I had to do something nice for the 70th anniversary of D-Day. I had planned a big piece showing the Higgins Boat landing craft, but I also kept seeing complex diagrams showing the landings themselves. I wondered what would happen if I drew one myself and cut it down to the barest minimum detail -- would it be more readable then? The answer: It became so simple that I then felt comfortable enough to add charts that showed the size of each individual landing force. I also loved the pre-landing prayer by Lt. Col. Wolverton, which I used as my headline. Wolverton parachuted into St. Come-du-Mont, was snagged in a tree and then machine gunned by a German soldier as he hung there. June 6, 2014
