My managing editor suggested I do something with presidents visiting Orange County in advance of Obama's visit here to speak at graduation at UC Irvine. The catch: My pages also run in Riverside, Long Beach and Los Angeles. In search of a way to broaden the topic, I found a database of presidential commencement addresses going back decades. Turns out, this was only the fourth graduation speech a sitting president had given in California in a half-century. Problem solved. Crunch the numbers, find the best ways to display the data, pick out a nice picture of a recent graduation speech. As usual, I was particularly proud of my headline.
