For the 40th anniversary of the Chilean coup -- not one of America's brightest moves, by the way -- I wanted to find a way to liven up an otherwise straight retelling of what happened. When I saw the quote by then-President Salvador Allende, I knew I had my hook. With the coup underway, the presidential palace under bombardment and staring death in the fact, Allende wondered "what they have done with poor Pinochet," the one general he just knew would still be loyal to him. Pinochet, of course, led the junta. He then went on to run the country with an iron fist for decades, torturing and killing his enemies. Looking at this PDF now, I'm shocked: I distinctly remember moving the tiny photo of Allende down to line up with the other photos. Hmm. Sept. 11, 2013
