Our wire editor, Matt, found this great AP story and hoped I could use it. But I gave up on long narratives for my Focus pages back in June. I sliced up the story, twisted it all around, paired segments with visuals and turned it into an ASF. I tried to hard to keep the flavor of the piece, so I left the writer's name on the piece. After I built it, it sat in the can for a week-and-a-half. The night before it ran, the story updated. I pulled out the bit under "the Return" and replaced it with chunks from a fresh NYT story.
