Sen. John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., announced he would not seek a sixth term in the U.S. Senate. Great-grandson of the famous oil tycoon, Jay came to W.Va. in 1964 as part of the anti-poverty VISTA program. He saw the need to do more for the state, so he stayed and ran for -- and won -- a seat in the legislature in '66, secretary of state in '68, governor in '76 and '80, and then joined the U.S. Senate in 1984. A timeline shows these milestones and a few others over the span of his career, ending with Friday's announcement.
