The European tradition of a belen or the Nativity scene reached the Philippines in the 18th century, becoming the dominant Christmas decoration in the home. At the turn of the 20th century, the parol, symbolizing the star of Bethlehem, also became a Filipino Christmas icon. From its earlier versions made of bamboo and Japanese paper, the parol has evolved, translating the colorful and joyous Yuletide season into spectacular sizes and forms.
