Pope Benedict XVI insisted both Gospel writers wanted to write real history. Luke situates the Nativity according to Roman history (Augustus’ reign), while Matthew by Jewish events (Herod’s reign). The Pope said the Gospel writers were “much closer to the sources and events that we could ever claim to be, despite all our historical scholarship.”
