The day my sports concussions page ran, a retired high school boys' volleyball coach called to thank me and to bemoan the fact that so few kids play his sport. I was curious: How many boys play volleyball in California? That led me to this annual survey that tracks participation throughout the state. I hunted around for extra angles or factoids to pull out, but as the charts came together I realized: We don't really need more info here. The charts themselves do the heavy lifting.
