Eight thousand full-sized U.S. flags were put out in a field not far from my apartment complex to welcome wounded vets invited here for a weekend of fishing. A local man, Mike Hessong, took this picture of the flags from a helicopter and sent us an extremely high-resolution copy. I built a model of how it could be used sideways, J.R. Ortega wrote the headline and Kimiko Fieg built the page itself. You also have to give ample credit to editor Chris Cobler, who didn't bat an eye and seemed delighted to give unusual play to uncommonly good visuals. A nice effort all the way around. May 13, 2015
