I was really scraping for something to run the Monday before Christmas until a colleague suggested this one. The 230th anniversary of the day George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army gave me a chance to put that event into perspective with the last two-and-a-half years of the war. The lead art is cropped from a giant painting that hangs in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Monday, Dec. 23.
